Our school has actively participated in the "Secondary School Coral Nursery Programme," organized by the Coral Research Institute of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, for six consecutive years. The programme aims to promote local coral conservation, allowing students to take part hands-on, learn about ecological preservation, and develop a sense of responsibility.
Over the past year, guided by teachers, our students adopted and cared for local coral fragments provided by the Coral Research Institute. They carefully observed and recorded the corals’ growth, and joined field trips to the Coral Conservation Area at Hoi Ha Wan, gaining deeper insights into coral ecosystems and the importance of conservation. Through these experiences, students learned how to care for corals and tackle various challenges in the natural environment.
On 29th June, student representatives, together with the CUHK Coral Research Team, visited Tolo Harbour to transplant the corals—nurtured over the past year—back into the ocean. Students assisted with the transplantation from a small boat and observed the process via a live feed from an underwater robot. This activity enabled students to engage in scientific research and deepened their understanding and commitment to conservation.
Afterwards, our teachers and students were interviewed by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), sharing their experiences and learning outcomes. Through this programme, students not only enhanced their environmental awareness but also developed problem-solving and teamwork skills. Our school will continue to actively participate in conservation and environmental education, promote sustainable development, and contribute to protecting our precious marine ecosystem.
